Tiertime's Next Gen Slicer - UP Studio 3

Hello I am testing catfish under MAC OS 10.15
the functions I have tested are working great and I am pleased to seen many new settings
I use a UP Box+ printer

Following 5 things I have which are not working as expected:
-) Auto Nozzle height is not working.
Print surface is lowering (to z -160) and then moving up very slow at height -197mm it stops with error message. Only manual nozzle height works.
-) I use mainly ABS+ and platform heats only to 70Ā° and not 90Ā°. I can use a workaround: If I start a print and then I interrupt it before the printer starts to print. Then I hit the button again for heating the platform temperature goes up to 90Ā°.
-) At end of printing the print head remains very near the object and does not move to home position. This causes some damage due to heat to the object if it takes too long. I need to press stop button and send printer to home position.
-) If I print on raft the bottom surface looks not as nice (very rough structure). With up studio software it was much more smooth.
-) the bonding between top of raft and object is not very strong, sometimes the object comes loose during print. Are there any parameters to change to get better bonding and surface?

We have had the up mini2 for several years and it has been a really great entry level printing machine. Having the ability to print ABS in an enclosed heated chamber is fabulous, as well as printing any kind of filament I spool it up with. The quick repetitive model printing is also another good feature, and after 12 kilograms of filament and very few failed prints is proof of the machine quality. That is a sizeable amount of filament for a small print volume.

However, Tiertime you are cheating yourselves and causing your customers to buy machines from other companies simply because you will not meet your customers request for wanting to use gcode. If there was a 3rd party drop in compatible control board for my up mini2 that would allow me to print in gcode I would get it and be finished with up studio.

Several months ago we needed a bigger print volume and wanted the ability to print gcode. I looked to Tiertime to fill the gap and ultimately decided to buy from another vender. We are now shopping for our 3rd printer and guess what; it isnā€™t going to be a Tiertime! Iā€™m taking the time to post my opinion because I think you build a quality machineā€¦ Catfish??? I have been waiting several days for the activation to arriveā€¦ ??.. Today I uninstalled it, simply not waiting any longer.

Think there might be a national holiday going on in China? Iā€™d give it a few more days, try again and make sure to check your spam folder.

Excellent! Duet Conversion. You are in the super modified classā€¦

Yes and no. Printer currently has the Up! board installed, and itā€™ll get trinamic drivers fitted, one day. If I had a Duet2Wifi maybe it would have worked better than the maestro, wired Ethernet just didnā€™t work well with the current location/setup. Using the Duet3 + RPi seems a bit of a waste.

On the other hand Catfish will probably be all I need to stick with the Up board, sometime over the winter. Simplify3D development seems to have stalled years ago, Cura is too bloated and just donā€™t agree with slic3r. Kiss and icesl has to much a learning curve atm.

Developing a new slicer would be the easiest way of solving the issue. The meaning and symbolic messages of words on the Asian side of the world is interesting. Catfish for a slicer, ok we will wait and see what kind of fish is served up. I would prefer either a marlin firmware flash for the up control board or another control board with connection adapters. Like many of 3d printing fans, we have had to learn Cura. I currently have a used 8 bit board I want to try and when the touch screen comes in I plan to work up the electrical adapters. I will post results when it is completed.

Thanks for the info! Iā€™m still trying to figure out why I canā€™t print through wand with my cetus mk2 it just loads an loads an loads even if its just a calibration cube thats 20mm cubed.

As soon as I can figure out the wand issue I can start actually testing and giving you guys more feedback!

Issue is looks like TinyFab solution with smoothieware has been very difficult for folks to keep working correctly. Why Iā€™m ok with the factory firmware on the cetus is cause it justā€¦ worksā€¦ I can print nearly 24/7 365 without having to mess with any settings. As long as they can make this slicer give that same comfort as the UP studio while adding some more detailed setting controls I"m happy with being stuck with this firmware.

I agree the quick re-printing of models is an excellent feature. Up studio is a great slicer for entry level printing, it is very easy to use. Yet there are some prints that are stronger when they have been through Cura because you have far more print control over your models. I hope catfish can solve the Gcode issue. You can see by the number of views and comments made on this Catfish threat that there is a high desire of up users that need and want to use Gcode with Tiertime printers.

Hello, I have been playing around with catfish and noticed that with the infill path set to ā€˜Hexagonā€™ it seems to output the same pattern as ā€˜Zigzagā€™ once slicedā€¦ is this a known issue?
Thatā€™s all for now.

Cheers

Dan

Could I request Tiertime makes a post saying ā€œnew version!ā€ here when editing the first post with new download links? No notification that the 1.2.6 release was posted on the 18th, just accidentally saw it now.

Keep up the good work, this is definitively steps in the right direction :+1:

1.2.6

Loading, slicing and clicking path to output file works, but when clicking path a second time to output both .tsk and .gcode file slicer throws error that doesnā€™t make much sense.

slicing the model again allows to click path and output second file.

also, path is not a good name for this button with the current function, does not describe action of outputting a file.

Still unable to load .tsk files and exported g-code doesnā€™t seem to print on the up mini 2.

Tried downloading the latest Up Studio, but as 2.6 was downloaded I notice Up mini is not supported after 2.5 and the provided download link seems to be on a dial up modem in china; this is pretty poor product supportā€¦

current the 2 setting are the same, but we are working on the hexgon infill.

For the raft and bottom surface issue, you may try adjusting these 3 settings:

The Gcode function is still premature, and if print with up mini 2 why not use tsk file?
Catfish cannot load tsk file for the moment, tsk file has to be load by UP Studio or through Wand.

Thanks for the info Jason. What does the ā€˜Bond Strengthā€™ value actually adjust? If I had to guess it changes the line width on the first bottom layers of the part ontop of the raft?
So if it were 100%, would the line width be 0.4mm?

I tried loading both the .gcode and .tsk file into UpStudio (2.5.32.461) to see which would work.

when loading .tsk file:

And when I tried looking for a newer version it turns out 2.6 isnā€™t compatible with up mini 2, and the version linked to for up mini took 5 hours to download and then I noticed it was 2.5.12.459 so older than the one Iā€™ve been using since August 2018. Should I switch to 2.5.12.459?
