I found that 15 seconds on the plate with a hair drier was enough to let the first couple of layers of ABS adhere perfectly. After that the temperature of the plate was irrelevant, and it was fine to allow it to cool naturally. I did put the printer in a box though - the one it arrived in, in fact.
